At OutagesIO, we have been discussing the challenges of supporting Windows and how we want to avoid burdening our members with this issue.

One problem we face is difficulty in identifying why service disruptions occur or why agents fail to communicate, resulting in the display of "Inactive/Disconnected" statuses. What makes this hard to solve is that it seems to affect a small number of members.

To address this challenge, we have been considering offering a hardware-only option. However, we acknowledge that shipping to other countries has been a challenging experience, with some packages being returned or lost in transit once outside of the USA.

To overcome these challenges, members could order hardware from their preferred vendors within their countries. We would then offer an installation service for a small fee, where we remotely upgrade the device to ensure it's ready to use with our free or Extended reports.

For those who prefer to upgrade the firmware or install the agent themselves, we would offer it for a small fee. After upgrading, members can use their device with our free or Extended reports. The small fee would help offset the cost of constant development for various operating systems/hardware.

This solution would get members up and running within a few days, eliminating the need to upgrade Windows versions while providing 24/7 monitoring without the requirement for a dedicated PC.

Again, these are internal conversations at this time and not a change that is a certainty at this time.

The ratio is much higher for software because it's an instant download.

Hardware is mostly used by businesses while software agents are mostly used by consumers and especially free members.

Because most people are becoming used to ordering online that waiting a day to a few days for most might not be a problem.

The Windows software is much more of a challenge to maintain across so many versions and so many possible combinations of packages installed on different PCs.

That said we do continue to try and find the elusive problem we seem to have with the Windows agent on some combinations of PCs and their installed software. However, this seems to be a rare problem as we've only heard about it a few times.
